We Love Art Toolkit
Coupeville Library with Maria Corryell-Martin
There are so many great sharing websites and people in the Nature Journaling Community. One of them is right here in our backyard-Maria Coryell-Martin and her store Art Toolkit in Port Townsend, Washington.
Art Toolkit is a jewel box of an art supply store and all about small, portable, QUALITY supplies. Featuring small tool kits, compact sized palettes and Rosemary brushes. Kathy and I both use our Art Toolkits daily. We have the small A5 kit. The kit fits easily in our sketching bag or backpack, it only weighs 1/2 pound and can carry everything you might need for sketching on the go. Maria's blog is a gateway to learning. There is an extensive online library of Demo's; free, short, recorded videos of Maria interviewing artists with demonstrations. Also, classes, inspiration, techniques and more.
One of our favorite sketching getaways is to catch the early morning ferry from Coupeville to Port Townsend. We sketch our way to and from Port Townsend on the ferry as a Walk On for $2.80 each way. First stop is for coffee and a treat and a sketch. Then to Art Toolkit for more treats. We like to walk uptown and check out Aldrich's Grocery Store, the fabulous resale shop Up Store and make a quick stop by the Carnegie Library. We meander our way back down the hill to downtown, past the biggest Deodora Cedar in the world and then enjoy lunch and a sketch at Sirens or Silverwater Cafe or Hanazono Noodle.
Last Saturday, May 18, 2025 Maria was the guest speaker at the Coupeville Library. She spoke about her 2011 visit to Greenland, artists who inspired her and exploring through art. We watched videos and Maria instructed us on the technique of capturing quick gesture sketches. Below are our sketches.
